dc.description | The cultivation of corn (Zea mays L.) plays an important role in aspects of food safety, whether in human food, as well as in animal nutrition. Due to its wide distribution and incidence throughout the year, the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797) is one of the most harmful pests in the tropical regions of America. The use of synthetic insecticides has been the main tool to control populations at a level that does not cause economic harm. However, a biotechnology tool to minimize the losses caused by the fall armyworm has been used by applying the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacterium. The present study aimed to describe the insertion process of the Cry protein from Bt and to detail the effects as a bio-insecticide. The genes that code for Cry proteins have been used extensively in genetically modified crops, these transgenic crops can produce Bt crystals that become resistant to insects. It is recommended to establish biotechnological programs to isolate Bt strains for the elaboration of bio-insecticides from Cry proteins for their application in the integrated pest management of corn crops and other items. | es_ES |

dc.description.abstract | El cultivo de maíz (Zea mays L.), juega un papel importante en aspectos de seguridad alimentaria, ya sea en la alimentación humana, así como en la alimentación animal. Por su amplia distribución e incidencia durante todo el año, el gusano cogollero (Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797) es una de las plagas más nocivas de las regiones tropicales de América, el uso de insecticidas de origen sintético ha sido la principal herramienta para controlar poblaciones a un nivel que no ocasionen daños económicos. No obstante, una herramienta de la biotecnología para minimizar las pérdidas ocasionadas por el gusano cogollero, ha sido utilizada mediante la aplicación de la bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). El presente estudio tuvo como objetivos Describir el proceso de inserción de la proteína Cry de Bacillus thuringiensis y detallar los efectos como bio insecticida. Los genes que codifican para las proteínas Cry, se han utilizado ampliamente en cultivos modificados genéticamente, estos cultivos transgénicos pueden producir cristales de Bt que se vuelven resistentes a los insectos. Se recomienda establecer programas biotecnológicos para aislar cepas de Bt para la elaboración de bio insecticidas a partir de las proteínas Cry para su aplicación en el manejo integrado de plagas del cultivo de maíz y otros rubros. | es_ES |
